Dragging music searches
into the 21st century
The round-up of online music stores is still our most popular blog post, so we decided to give you more of what you like by putting together a comprehensive guide to digital music distributors.
It seems, however, that this has already been done. Buzzsonic has an ample, two part guide here & here, including digital music aggregators, online widgets and a hefty reading list.
It was written a few months ago so the info is still widely up-to-date, but the launch of Google’s OneBox last week provides another undoubtedly and increasingly important aspect to look out for when choosing a distributor.
Google have partnered with Lala and Myspace (which just acquired iLike) to make the OneBox search feature possible. The idea is that whenever a user makes a music-related search (e.g. the name of a song, artist, album or even lyrics) it will throw up results that include audio previewing directly from Google’s search results. There are also links to purchase the full song from other stores including Pandora, imeem and Rhapsody, encouraging users to buy the tracks they’ve Googled and helping them find related music.
At the moment, OneBox is only available in the US and erm… China, but we’re sure it won’t be too long until it lands here in the UK.
